Roald Dahl

When I was young, one of my favourite authors ever was Roald Dahl, the most well-known name in the world of children's literature as well as one of the world's bestselling fiction authors with sales estimated at 100 million. Many of his books are written from the point of view of a child, making them very easy to read and understand. The stories were always creative and exciting that they kept me lying in bed reading for days. A few of Roald Dahl's most acclaimed books include The Big Friendly Giant, James and The Giant Peach, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, all of which have been made into popular movies.

When choosing books for children, many parents hope to find books that can help improve their children's English, and at the same time, embody essential values and virtues that help build up their children's personality. Books by Roald Dahl are not only about depicting funny and exciting characters, but are, more importantly, focused on enlightening us about lessons in life, what to be and not to be.

At lower levels, Roald Dahl books are filled with full colour illustrations that make them fun to read and allow your child to have a better understanding of the stories. As this acclaimed author writes with a great sense of humour, I'm sure your child will enjoy his books as much as I do!

Currently, my daughter is burying her head in the books of Winnie the Witch. I am not surprised as myself was mesmerized by its unique illustration and style at first sight.

For kids who love funny stories, magic and cat (Winnie has a lovely black cat called Wilbur), Winnie the Witch is definitely THE choice! Once the children are clicked with Winnie in the picture books, they would keep on reading and reading and it really helps in encouraging the transition from picture books to chapter books as they leap with enthusiasm to read Winnie's young fiction.

Jacqueline Wilson

When I was a teenager, I loved to bury myself in books whenever I was at home. Not because I had nothing better to do, but because I enjoyed the sense of escapism I got from reading stories much more exciting than my life. On the other hand, I also appreciated books that are relatable, books that seem that they are speaking to me.

It may be difficult to find books that involve fantasy yet still remain down to earth, but Jacqueline Wilson managed to write a whole range of books that are able to achieve the best of both worlds. This award-winning author not only uncovers fun and exciting adventures, but at the same time, sheds light upon issues that many teenagers face when they are growing up, such as divorce and bullying.

Many teenagers are going through a lot of confusion when they grow up, and it may not be the easiest thing for them to come to you about their problems. Therefore, it would be a good idea to get your kids to read a couple of these books to help them get their answers without actually going through any awkward confrontations.

If your kids, like me when I was younger, get addicted to Jacqueline Wilson books, fret not! With a huge collection of books written and published, you need not worry that your kids won't be able to satisfy their appetite for more Jacqueline Wilson!

Fun Reading with Priddy Books

Have you ever found it difficult to convince your child into reading a book when they can't seem to keep their hands off their toys? As children, especially very young ones, tend to have short attention spans, it is necessary to provide them with books that are fun, interesting and appealing to the eye.

Priddy have specially designed different books that can easily catch young kids’ attention. Not only are all their books loaded with colourful illustrations, many of them are also special in the way they use real pictures instead, which makes it much easier for young children to understand new words and concepts. With books ranging from baby board books to touch-and-feel and wipe-clean books, children are provided with a great variety of fun choices that are not only interesting to read, but very effective for learning new words and acquiring reading skills as well.

An important lesson for my children

Tonight, I was reading "High Flier, The Story of Amy Johnson" to my children. The story is about how Amy Johnson, amid the strong view that women were not as capable as men, became a pilot and tried to break the records for long flights around the world in 1930.

Amy Johnson resisted the norm about what a woman should or shouldn't do and challenged her own ability. I was particularly touched to learn that Amy could accomplish her goal partly because she had always had the strongest support from her father. Ceasing the opportunity, I asked Hillary and Alexis on whether they thought there is any gap between the capability of boys and girls, I could not be more delighted when I heard them both shouted firmly, "No!"

In a society where traditional thinking with biased ideas are still finding ways to creep into our children's mind, I am resolute to act fast and teach them to THINK and to make sound judgment.

The Oxford Reading Tree

The Oxford Reading Tree is a world-renowned series of children's books designed for children aged 0-8 to help them develop early reading skills, introduce them to phonics in a fun and systematic way, and offer a simple and easy to use resource for teaching comprehension skills and strategies to junior readers. The Oxford Reading Tree is used by 80% of primary schools and is the most popular reading scheme in the UK. The books are carefully categorised into various reading levels and so you can easily find books that suit your children most.

We highly recommend The Oxford Reading Tree's Biff, Chip and Kipper's stories, which consist of 9 reading stages. Language comprehension is at the heart of them as the multi-layered stories follow a group of characters through real, engaging storylines.
Stories have been written using a mix of high-frequency and phonic words which can be blended and sounded out. Moreover, interesting historical characters and facts are also introduced in the more advanced stages, allowing your children to develop reading skills as well as acquiring knowledge about the world history. They are truly ideal to consolidate our children's English skills and broaden their horizons.

Enjoy reading with your children!

For Children aged 3 to 6

When our children are not toddlers anymore, with their minds slightly more mature and are starting to question about things around them, what would be better if we can introduce books to them that are fun, thought-provoking, and at the same time teach them correct values and attitudes that they should pursue in life? We highly recommend Donaldson's "The Gruffalo" and "The Snail and the Whale", both of them being bestsellers and the latter one is named by the former British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, as one of his all-time favourites.

The Gruffalo is a story about a quick-witted mouse who scares the Gruffalo, the biggest and scariest creature in the woods, away. The Snail and the Whale is about how a tiny snail hitches a ride on a humpback whale and saves the whale when he is beached, showing that the smallest creature can do the greatest thing of all.

We hope that both you and your children will find them enjoyable!

The Reading Chain

Last week, I was reading the Oxford Reading Tree "A Day in London" to Hillary during bedtime (probably the 99th times) and on page 12, it said Gran took the children to Trafalgar Square where a statue of Nelson stood. I was caught by surprise when Hillary suddenly asked, "Mummy, who is Nelson - the statue at Trafalgar Square?"

I love it when Hillary asked questions. It opens up our dialogue and I would spend long time, as long as required, to explain whatever the subject was and the values that brought along.

To address her query on Nelson, I got her the book "Nelson" by Usborne and tonight, we read the heroic story of Horatio Nelson together.

書緣 / Books and Me

I have loved books since I was very little. I loved books so much that even the game I played was about books - no doubt that I would be the librarian whilst my little sister was asked to borrow books and return them over and over again .... and listen to my story-telling sessions!

Have I given a name to the reading corner? How can it possibly not having a name! As I adored my sister, I put her first name before mine and named the reading corner "Cheuk Nga Reading Corner". I was content with the name, even my mum said it was a good idea. This happened when I was about six to seven-year-old.

Books have always been part of my life. Although I have never managed to have my own library, I was able to squeeze some space for my huge book shelves all along. Growing up and having worked for so many years, I have inevitably changed, in terms of my point of view on many subjects as well as pastimes. Nonetheless, when I reached the junction where I needed to choose what to do for the rest of my life, something about books was the first idea that came up. Being a mother of two young children, I was very concerned about what the younger generation's needs are and Booklodge was formed, naturally.

Today, I am pleased to say, 'I live in my dream!'

Hillary's book shelf

My daughter Hillary is five. She loves books (!!) and is now an
enthusiastic reader. It is my intention to share with you the books she reads and why she loves them so much!

Princess Poppy is a character she always talks about recently. This series has quite a range of books for 3 to 9. Hillary is currently devouring the picture books which include a little letter stored in an envelope at the front page and 50 stickers for her to play with. I am keen to let her read this series as there is always a theme in the story which teaches children a value or virtue. For example, in "Get Well Soon", Princess Poppy was so concerned about her grandpa's sickness that she could not perform well in her gymnastic competition. However, she learned that it was not important at all comparing to Grandpa's health. In another story, the "Mermaid Princess", although all the girls are supposed to compete with each other for the best costume, Princess Poppy gave her tiara to a girl who got lost in the carnival. At the end, Princess Poppy won the prize because of her good deed ...

How nice it would be if Hillary could act as Princess Poppy!! I always ask her a few questions to consolidate the ideas behind the stories and Hillary seemed to get them. Well, education takes time and effort, right?

Group Purchase Offer

How can we give a real bargain to our customers? This is the question we had in mind for a long time.

Recently, we have been working on the Group Purchase Offer and a critically reviewed catalogue is being produced. We are so proud to announce that the catalogue should be ready by end of March.

What's more surprising to us is the discount we are really offering is even bigger than we claimed!! While we mention we are offering 40% off the market price in the catalogue, a book we are selling at $59 in the catalogue is now being sold by a major bookchain at $102!!

We can't wait to launch the project. By so doing we hope we can really promote the habit of reading to children by offering a much lower cost in buying books for the parents.

Softcopy of the catalogue will be uploaded to our website shortly. If you are interested in obtaining a hardcopy of the catalogue, please email us and leave us your address. Our email: info@booklodge.com.

Bedtime

Reading books to children before bedtime is what every parents must have done and treasured. Sure enough, nothing is better than winding down a long hard day by being with your little ones and reading them their favourite stories. I have this habit of reading bedtime stories to my daughter since she was born. YES, since she was born. At the time, everyone thought I was crazy and said that the baby would not have understood what I was reading. Is it that important for her to understand?

I think the time I read to her, she could feel my love through the cuddles I gave her and most importantly, she heard my voice knowing that mummy was right next to her. I started reading some very simple books to her with lots of colours and funny characters. After repeatedly reading to her every night, her interest towards books and reading have grown tremendously. And now, at 5, she would choose the books she wish I read to her before going to bed. Sometimes, she would even read together with me! Can you think of a better bedtime activity than letting your children lying in your arms listening to the stories they enjoyed?

What's more important, this habit not only nurture your parent-child relationship. By looking forward to each night's bedtime stories, your children get to love books more and more!

Reading is fun

For parents who wish to introduce the habit of reading to their toddlers, we highly recommend the series of Usborne's farmyard tales.

On every page of all their story books, a little yellow duck is hiding and awaiting to be spotted. Young children are thrilled when they find the duck and there they go, page after page and book after book they want some more!!

These books are available at our website www.booklodge.com
